Gaps between zeros of Dedekind zeta-functions of quadratic number fields. II

Effective Hamiltonian Approach to Hyperon Beta Decay with Final-State Baryon Polarization
Using an effective Hamiltonian approach, we obtain expressions for hyperon
beta decay final-state baryon polarization. Terms through second order in the
energy release are retained. The resulting approximate expressions are much
simpler and more compact than the exact expressions, and they agree closely

Educational aspirations in inner city schools
The research aimed to assess the nature and level of pupils’ educational aspirations and to elucidate the factors that influence these aspirations. A sample of five inner city comprehensive secondary schools were selected by their Local Authority because of poor pupil attendance, below average examination results and low rates of continuing in full-time education after the age of 16. Schools were all ethnically mixed and co-educational. Over 800 pupils aged 12-14 completed a questionnaire assessing pupils’ experience of home, school and their peers. A sub-sample of 48 pupils selected by teachers to reflect ethnicity and ability levels in individual schools also participated in detailed focus group interviews. There were no significant differences in aspirations by gender or year group, but differences between ethnic groups were marked. Black African, Asian Other and Pakistani groups had significantly higher educational aspirations than the White British group, who had the lowest aspirations. The results suggest the high aspirations of Black African, Asian Other and Pakistani pupils are mediated through strong academic self-concept, positive peer support, a commitment to schooling and high educational aspirations in the home. They also suggest that low educational aspirations may have different mediating influences in different ethnic groups. The low aspirations of White British pupils seem to relate most strongly to poor academic self-concept and low educational aspirations in the home, while for Black Caribbean pupils disaffection, negative peers and low commitment to schooling appear more relevant. Interviews with pupils corroborated the above findings and further illuminated the factors students described as important in their educational aspirations. The results are discussed in relation to theories of aspiration which stress its nature as a cultural capacity
The hyperfine transition in light muonic atoms of odd Z
The hyperfine (hf) transition rates for muonic atoms have been re-measured
for select light nuclei, using neutron detectors to evaluate the time
dependence of muon capture. For F = 5.6 (2)
s for the hf transition rate, a value which is considerably more
accurate than previous measurements. Results are also reported for Na, Al, P,

Randomized trial of complete versus lesion-only revascularization in patients undergoing primary percutaneous coronary intervention for STEMI and Multivessel Disease
BACKGROUND: The optimal management of patients found to have multivessel disease while undergoing primary percutaneous coronary intervention (P-PCI) for ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction is uncertain. OBJECTIVES: CvLPRIT (Complete versus Lesion-only Primary PCI trial) is a U.K. open-label randomized study comparing complete revascularization at index admission with treatment of the infarct-related artery (IRA) only. METHODS: After they provided verbal assent and underwent coronary angiography, 296 patients in 7 U.K. centers were randomized through an interactive voice-response program to either in-hospital complete revascularization (n = 150) or IRA-only revascularization (n = 146). Complete revascularization was performed either at the time of P-PCI or before hospital discharge. Randomization was stratified by infarct location (anterior/nonanterior) and symptom onset (≤3 h or >3 h). The primary endpoint was a composite of all-cause death, recurrent myocardial infarction (MI), heart failure, and ischemia-driven revascularization within 12 months. RESULTS: Patient groups were well matched for baseline clinical characteristics. The primary endpoint occurred in 10.0% of the complete revascularization group versus 21.2% in the IRA-only revascularization group (hazard ratio: 0.45; 95% confidence interval: 0.24 to 0.84; p = 0.009). A trend toward benefit was seen early after complete revascularization (p = 0.055 at 30 days). Although there was no significant reduction in death or MI, a nonsignificant reduction in all primary endpoint components was seen. There was no reduction in ischemic burden on myocardial perfusion scintigraphy or in the safety endpoints of major bleeding, contrast-induced nephropathy, or stroke between the groups. CONCLUSIONS: In patients presenting for P-PCI with multivessel disease, index admission complete revascularization significantly lowered the rate of the composite primary endpoint at 12 months compared with treating only the IRA. In such patients, inpatient total revascularization may be considered, but larger clinical trials are required to confirm this result and specifically address whether this strategy is associated with improved survival. A Combined Spitzer and Chandra Survey of Young Stellar Objects in the Serpens Cloud Core
We present Spitzer and Chandra observations of the nearby (~260 pc) embedded
stellar cluster in the Serpens Cloud Core. We observed, using Spitzer's IRAC
and MIPS instruments, in six wavelength bands from 3 to 70 , to detect
thermal emission from circumstellar disks and protostellar envelopes, and to
classify stars using color-color diagrams and spectral energy distributions
(SEDs). These data are combined with Chandra observations to examine the
effects of circumstellar disks on stellar X-ray properties. Young diskless
stars were also identified from their increased X-ray emission. We have
identified 138 YSOs in Serpens: 22 class 0/I, 16 flat spectrum, 62 class II, 17
transition disk, and 21 class III stars; 60 of which exhibit X-ray emission.
Our primary results are the following: 1.) ten protostars detected previously
in the sub-millimeter are detected at lambda < 24 microns, seven at lambda < 8
microns, 2.) the protostars are more closely grouped than more evolved YSOs
(median separation : ~0.024 pc, and 3.) the luminosity and temperature of the
X-ray emitting plasma around these YSOs does not show any significant
dependence on evolutionary class. We combine the infrared derived values of AK
and X-ray values of NH for 8 class III objects and find that the column density
of hydrogen gas per mag of extinctions is less than half the standard
interstellar value, for AK > 1. This may be the result of grain growth through
coagulation and/or the accretion of volatiles in the Serpens cloud core.Comment: 69 pages, 16 figures, accepted to ApJ. Higher Resolution Figures at:

Searching for planetary-mass T-dwarfs in the core of Serpens
We searched for isolated planetary-mass T-dwarfs in the 3Myr old Serpens Core
cluster. We performed a deep imaging survey of the central part of this cluster
using the WIRCam camera at the CFHT. Observations were performed through the
narrow-band CH4_off and CH4_on filters, to identify young T-dwarfs from their
1.6micr methane absorption bands, and the broad-band JHK filters, to better
characterize the selected candidates. We complemented our WIRCam photometry
with optical imaging data from MegaCam at CFHT and Suprime-Cam at the Subaru
telescope and mid-IR flux measurements from the Spitzer c2d Legacy Survey. We
report four faint T-dwarf candidates in the direction of the Serpens Core with
CH4_on-CH4_off above 0.2 mag, estimated visual extinction in the range 1-9 mag
and spectral type in the range T1-T5 based on their dereddened CH4_on-CH4_off
colors. Comparisons with T-dwarf spectral models and optical to mid-IR
color-color and color-magnitude diagrams, indicate that two of our candidates
(ID1 and 2) are background contaminants (most likely heavily reddened
low-redshift quasars). The properties of the other two candidates (ID3 and 4)
are consistent with them being young members of the Serpens Core cluster,
although our analysis can not be considered conclusive. In particular, ID3 may
also be a foreground T-dwarf. It is detected by the Spitzer c2d survey but only
flux upper limits are available above 5.8 microns and, hence, we can not assess
the presence of a possible disk around this object. However, it presents some
similarities with other young T-dwarf candidates (SOri70 in the Sigma Ori
cluster and CFHTJ0344+3206 in the direction of IC348). If ID3 and 4 belong to
Serpens, they would have a mass of a few Jupiter masses and would be amongst
the youngest, lowest mass objects detected in a star-forming region so far.Comment: 11 Pages, 7 Figures, Accepted for publication on A&
Agency, qualia and life: connecting mind and body biologically
Many believe that a suitably programmed computer could act for its own goals and experience feelings. I challenge this view and argue that agency, mental causation and qualia are all founded in the unique, homeostatic nature of living matter. The theory was formulated for coherence with the concept of an agent, neuroscientific data and laws of physics. By this method, I infer that a successful action is homeostatic for its agent and can be caused by a feeling - which does not motivate as a force, but as a control signal. From brain research and the locality principle of physics, I surmise that qualia are a fundamental, biological form of energy generated in specialized neurons. Subjectivity is explained as thermodynamically necessary on the supposition that, by converting action potentials to feelings, the neural cells avert damage from the electrochemical pulses. In exchange for this entropic benefit, phenomenal energy is spent as and where it is produced - which precludes the objective observation of qualia

This suggests using pattern analysis techniques for beauty analysis.
